Dr. Kamala Uzzell

Dr. Kamala Uzzell is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor, Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Trauma Specialist, and the Founder of SOLAY Counseling & Consulting located in Durham, North Carolina. She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator at Campbell University. In addition to her academic role, Dr. Uzzell serves as President of the Board of Directors at Community Health Coalition, Director of Search & Behavioral Assessment at POLIHIRE, and adjunct faculty of Psychology at North Carolina Central University. A renowned keynote speaker and mental health expert, Dr. Uzzell brings more than 25 years of experience across counseling, leadership, and higher education.

Dr. Uzzell’s career in higher education includes adjunct faculty appointments at the University of Mount Olive, as well as leadership roles at North Carolina Central University’s School of Law, Shaw University, and Durham Technical Community College. She is certified in administering the EQ-i 2.0 and EQ 360 Emotional Intelligence Assessments, and has been featured in Essence Magazine, WRAL News, and as a guest therapist on OWN’s Unfaithful: Stories of Betrayal. Her work has also been showcased internationally, including a video art installation commissioned by the City of Toronto and the Toronto History Museum by award-winning artist Roger Mooking and director Director X.
With service and community engagement at the core of her work, Dr. Uzzell is an active member and volunteer of several professional and community organizations, including the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Team, Durham First Responders Crisis Intervention Team, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Links, Incorporated, and The BOW Collective.
A proud native of Eastern North Carolina, and a 27-year resident of Durham, Dr. Uzzell holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina State University, a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Campbell University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and is a member of both the North Carolina Counseling Association and the American Counseling Association.
